Koi Herpes Virus (KHV)

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

For anyone involved within the Koi industry, the recent appearance of Koi Herpes Virus is unwelcome news, given that it’s potentially deadly. As with the vast majority of herpes viruses, it is believed that the Koi Herpes Virus remains with the host for the duration of their life. Fish which have been exposed to it are considered carriers, whether or not they show any symptoms. At present the mortality rate stands at between 60 and 80 percent.

When it comes down to it, any Koi is susceptible to the virus. The only real way to prevent it is to make sure that your Koi is never exposed to it. As long as you are knowledgeable about the disease, the chances of your Koi catching Koi Herpes Virus is substantially less.

KHV Facts

As can be imagined, much has been learnt about the virus since it first surfaced way back in 1998. Familiarizing yourself with these facts could prevent your Koi pond from becoming infected.

Once a fish has been exposed to the virus, it will always be a carrier. Even with proper treatment, these fish will never be able to go to a new home. Sending exposed fish to a new home can potentially spread the virus to other fish. Likewise, adding new Koi into your pond could cause the new fish to get the virus, and cause a potentially higher mortality rate. There is no known cure for Koi Herpes Virus.

Contrary to what some may believe, the disease is not caused through stress although it is believed that undue stress can result in a higher mortality rate. Interestingly enough, the disease is only activated at a temperature of 74 degrees Fahrenheit. Being aware of this is extremely beneficial as it makes testing for the virus possible by means of quarantining. Primarily, the virus spreads via contact between an infected fish and a healthy fish, although it can also spread when healthy fish are placed in water that has had an infected fish swimming in it.

Preventing Further Spreading Of The Virus

Once your fish have been diagnosed with Koi Herpes Virus, the only real way to ensure that you do not infect any other fish is to consider depopulation. Depopulation is essentially the elimination of your entire population of Koi. While this might seem harsh, it is truly the only way to completely eliminate the possibility of any other fish from catching the virus.

Ideally, all new Koi purchased should be placed separately in quarantine for a period of at least fifteen days. During this period, the water in which they’re being kept should be maintained at a temperature of 74 degrees Fahrenheit; this being the temperature at which the virus becomes activated. If after spending fifteen days in these conditions, fish don’t develop any of the symptoms associated with Koi Herpes Virus, the chance of them being carriers is negligible.

It’s absolutely fundamental that quarantined fish be kept in total isolation, without any exceptions. In other words, it should not be allowed to come into contact with any other fish for the duration of the quarantine period. Likewise, it should not come into contact with any tools or equipment which you use with your regular population. You need to have a separate batch of tools and equipment for dealing with fish while in quarantine and they should be kept well away from the others. Of course if you have to actually hand the fish during this time, it’s essential that you pay particular attention to washing your hands immediately once you’ve finished.

Paralegal Sues Over Herpes

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

An unidentified Texas paralegal is suing an Internet gossip blog over an anonymous February post that allegedly portrayed her, using her name, as unattractive and infected with herpes, among other negative characterizations.

The cruel post on thedirty.com has humiliated and upset her and made it difficult for her to focus on her work, says the plaintiff in a lawsuit apparently filed in state court in Texas, according to the Houston Chronicle.

It names as defendants Dirty World Entertainment, which owns the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based website, and its founder, Hooman Karamian. Although federal law protects website operators from liability for content posted by others, the site and Karamian are liable for comments made by Karamian that validated the anonymous post, according to attorney Chris Bell of Houston, who filed the suit for the paralegal.

“We’ve got to do something whereby folks posting on the Internet are playing by defamation and privacy laws, too,” Bell tells the Chronicle.

But Arizona attorney David Gingras, who represents the defendants, says they, just like those responsible for the Facebook and MySpace social networking sites, aren’t liable for what users say in posts.

Dating With Herpes

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Most people suffer from broken relationships and tend to move on in search of new relationships but the emotional impact of the relationships that have floundered makes it more difficult to pursue the process of dating.

The situation worsens if you are dating with herpes, as you would be constantly living with the possibility of getting rejected and ridiculed.

Many people suffering from herpes prefer to pursue a solitary life rather than indulge in herpes dating.

More often than not, people reject and ridicule others suffering from herpes due to their own ignorance of matters relating to sexually transmitted diseases.

In fact, isn’t it better to date a person who admits suffering from herpes rather than dating someone whom you don’t know and most probably who might be suffering from herpes as do about 90% of the population and don’t know about it. Da ting with herpes has the advantage of the honesty factor involved in it.

The very fact that dating with herpes is based on a solid foundation of trust makes this relationship less of a risk as the frank communication reduces the risk of transmission.

Moreover, dating with herpes gives rise to a relationship that does not base itself on sex alone but explores alternatives in intimacy.

People suffering and dating with herpes can undergo treatment of herpes that would minimize the risk of transmission.

Herpes can be controlled with H-balm to increase the time for healing of the lesions so that the patient can regain a normal life.

Oral Sex and Genital Herpes

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Q: I’ve heard from some people that you can get genital herpes via oral sex after having a cold sore and I’ve heard from others that you can’t becuase they’re different strans of herpes. But let’s say someone performs oral sex and gets a cold sore a couple days later, should the person who received the oral sex be concerned about getting genital herpes?

A: There are indeed two strains of herpes. HSV1, which “prefers” the mouth but can infect the genitals, and HSV2, which “prefers” the genitals but can infect the mouth.Herpes is spread through skin-to-skin contact – so basically kissing for oral-to-oral transmission, genital sex for genital-to-genital transmission, and oral sex for oral-to-genital or genital-to-oral transmission. The best site that I know for info about oral herpes is below. Good luck.

Is It Possible To Misdiagnose Herpes?

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Yes it is possible to be miss diagnosed. But if they took a swab culture then that would be a more accurate way to test for herpes. There are some things that look like herpes.

Even if the sex was protected, u could still get herpes even if u use a condom. herpes takes skin to skin contact (like sex) to pass on. Plus it can only take one time to pass herpes on. If the person u had sex with had an out break or symptoms of an out break or a healing out break out side of where the condom covers then u could still end up getting herpes.

Its possible that if this person had the blood test done, and didn’t have enough anti-bodies for herpes then they could have tested negative. Or they weren’t properly tested for herpes in the first place.

Of course things can be misdiagnosed- but generally there is some reason for getting a diagnosis like herpes. Since you had a pap smear, you may also have had cultures taken for things like chlamydia and herpes. If the culture grew it out, then you have herpes, even though you may not have had a visible lesion. You can have the virus for some extended time, even years, and not have one – or ever have one for that matter. It would be impossible to ever say exactly where and when, or by who you were infected. Your ex partner could still have herpes, unless he’s had a blood test to say otherwise – and not have symptoms. Once you are infected with the virus, you have either a latent or active infection. Latent stage infections mean you don’t have any visible lesions, the virus is being supressed by the immune system- but you still can be tested and will be positive. You can also shed the virus at any time. An active infection is when there is a lesion on the skin present, actively giving off the virus. I doubt you were misdiagnosed, I just don’t know exactly how they reached the diagnosis. If you have doubts though, just go back and ask to be tested specifically for it. And in the meantime, please keep in mind that safe sex doesn’t mean you are protected against everything and at risk for nothing. All it really means is “safer” sex than nothing at all. You can still catch things you don’t want, it’s just less likely to happen. Unfortunately, it still can happen, and does. But with herpes, there is just no telling when you caught it, and no point going buggy pointing fingers.

Exercises And Better Sex

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Can certain exercises really lead to better sex?

Absolutely. For starters, a good cardiovascular routine helps build energy and stamina. In addition, strength training and stretching can help you build muscles and improve your flexibility so you can get into – and maintain – various positions during sex.

The best exercise to improve sex is the Kegel squeeze – basically strength training for your pubococcygeus (or PC) muscles, which hold up your vagina, anus, uterus, bladder, and urethra. “The stronger these muscles are, the more intense your orgasms will be,” says Chicago sex and relationship therapist Laura Berman, Ph.D., author of Passion Prescription (Hyperion 2006).

To locate your PC muscles, try stopping the flow of urine when you pee. Hold the squeeze for five seconds, then release. Doing 50 to 150 Kegel squeezes a day will help keep those muscles in good sex shape. (Avoid doing Kegels regularly while urinating; it can lead to urinary tract and bladder infections.) “It builds the vaginal muscle up so you can really tighten around your partner,” Comrie says.

What To Eat When You Have Herpes

The Best Anti-Viral Diet

Herpes can be a big pain in the rear. Did you know that 80% of Americans have suffered from oral herpes while only 20% suffer from genital herpes? Either way- there are a lot of us out there who have had the pesky blister appear with complimentary symptoms tingling of the skin, red skin, swollen glands and other flu like symptoms.

I know that I get a blister on my lip when I’m overly stressed and as a result have an impaired immune system or when I eat way too much chocolate for my own good!

There are natural therapies to address herpes outbreaks. As a holistic nutritionist in St. Petersburg, Fl – many of my clients seek my assistance in addressing such health concerns as herpes. I try to incorporate a healthy diet into the plan or protocols of my clients.

I recommend avoiding chocolate, nuts, peas and wheat — all foods that contain the amino acid L-arginine which has been found to promote the herpes virus. Luckily the balance of L-arginine is an amino acid called L-Lysine that has been found to suppress the virus.

By eating lysine rich foods like legumes, turkey, fish, chicken, red meat and most veggies – many of my clients have found they can manange and eliminate the herpes viral outbreaks. This is especially important for those who may have genital herpes, an extremely contagious form of herpes that is transmitted through sexual activities.

There are a few great topical products that I also recommend. First, at the first twinge of pain I advise using organic apple cider vinegar to quell the outbreak. Usually this will speed the process and the blister will appear faster and heal faster with topical application sof products like Super Lysine cream and bee propolis.

Adding aloe vera to the diet and used as a topical agent as well helps treat and heal the skin quickly. Topics applications of any kind should take place 4 times a day until the blister completely heals.

Ultimately, the goal is to shorten the outbreak times. I’ve seen many clients who suffer for a week or more have a small blister for a period of only 2 days.

If you suffer from frequent herpes outbreaks, it may be time to assess the strength of your immune system and assess your diet to cut out herpes aggitating foods and bolster you immune system with a great regime of Cell Forte (IP-6), lysine supplementation and bee propolis will be essential.

Cold Sore and Herpes

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Is a cold sore the same as herpes?

Cold sores don’t seem to carry the same stigma as genital herpes. But the fact is, strains of the same herpes simplex virus cause cold sores on the lips (and other areas of the face, chest, even the fingers), as well as the blisters around the genitals.

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) usually occurs above the waist (generally through kissing or sharing eating utensils), while herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) usually occurs below the waist (generally through sexual contact). But the reality is that you can get either virus in either area through oral-genital contact. “People aren’t as embarrassed to say ‘I get cold sores’, but fewer people are apt to bring up that they have genital herpes, although both of them could be in either place,” Updike says. Genital HSV-1 actually appears to be on the rise among adolescents, according to Comrie, “because they’re having oral sex instead of intercourse.” While both HSV1 and HSV2 are treatable, neither are curable.

Health experts say the popular belief that cold sores are benign stems from social perception – not medical reality. Actually, the virus strain that causes cold sores can, in some cases, also cause serious eye and brain infections. It’s estimated that 50%-80% of American adults have oral herpes, while 20% have genital herpes.

HIV and AIDS Related To Skin Conditions

Monday, May 18th, 2009

As a result of their compromised immune systems, patients with HIV (H-I-V) or AIDS (aids) are vulnerable to a number of skin diseases. Many of these are common skin disorders, but in HIV or AIDS patients, the symptoms tend to be much more severe. During the early phase of HIV infection, 95 percent of patients will experience herpes simplex (SIHM-plecks) Type 1 or 2, causing painful, recurrent out breaks of sores around the mouth or genitals.

Problems such as candidiasis (Can-dih-DYE-uh-sihs) and herpes zoster (ZAWST-uhr) may also occur and become progressively worse. Candidiasis is a fungal infection that causes a burning, itchy rash, while herpes zoster results in shingles, an extremely uncomfortable rash that may hurt even after the sores have healed. Other skin conditions affecting HIV and AIDS patients are rarely seen in the general population.

One example is infection by the bacteria staphylococcus aureus, (staf-uhl-oh-KAW-kuhs AR-ee-uhs) which may cause skin blisters, boils, and infection of the hair follicles. Another is a cancerous growth known as Kaposi’s sarcoma (kuh-POH-seez sawr-KOH-muh), which is typically considered one of the defining symptoms of full-blown AIDS. These lesions usually strike men and may first appear as a small brown or black spot on dark individuals or a purple, bruise-like mark on those with lighter skin.

Will My Vagina Be Noticeably Bigger After I Have A Baby?

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

If you push a baby out through your vagina, you can expect some stretching. “After delivery, the vaginal opening is anywhere from one to four centimeters bigger than it was before,” says Dr. Bruce Rosenzweig, director of urogynecology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Whether your private parts snap back to pre-delivery size after your recovery depends on how big your baby was, how long you pushed, how well your OB repaired any tears, and whether you’re diligent about doing your postpartum Kegel exercises. “If you do those Kegel exercises to strengthen the vaginal muscles, the outcome is better,” Comrie says. If you had an episiotomy and your OB was meticulous about sewing it up, she adds, “you could be better than before.”

That said, after multiple deliveries, your vagina may still feel a bit roomier, and you may want more tightening than you’ll get from marathon Kegel sessions. If so, ask your gynecologist about vaginal reconstruction (aka perineoplasty or vaginoplasty), which can help lift and tighten the sagging muscles at the vagina’s opening and deeper inside.
