Cold sores are embarrassing, they hurt and we would love nothing more than to get rid of them as soon as possible. So, for when cold and flu season is underway–I thought I’d spend some time telling you how to get rid of cold sores the natural way.
Some people may try to tell you that there’s nothing that can be done because they come from a virus. Others may try to give you harsh medicines to shrink them down. I prefer a different method–a natural one using herbs and essential oils.
Tips:
* Tea tree essential oil is an antiviral. You can put it directly on the cold sore or mix 5 drops in with 1/4 cup witch hazel and dab on with a cotton ball. Store the remaining remedy in your bottle and tighten the lid.
* Lemon balm is a classic antiviral remedy, especially for herpes and cold sores, which are caused from the Herpes Simplex virus. Brew a classic infusion by pouring 1 cup of hot water over 1 tsp. of the dried herb. Let it steep for 10 minutes. Dab some of the infusion on with a cotton ball. Strain and drink the remainder to tackle the virus from the inside.
* Echinacea is also another potential remedy for cold sores. Buy the tincture (I prefer the glycerine-based tinctures) and follow the instructions on the bottle for proper consumption.
* Garlic is also said to have antiviral properties. You can eat garlic in your food, take garlic capsules and also rub some garlic juice that has been extracted from a fresh clove directly on the cold sore. To make the fresh juice, just crush a garlic clove and rub it on the cold sore and the area around it.
* I used to get cold sores now and then when I had a cold – mainly when I was a kid. In my adult life, I can only think of one or two instances of having a cold sore outbreak. I drink several cups of green tea a day which I bet has something to do with it. Green tea has been show to strengthen the immune system – a stronger immune system may result in less cold sore outbreaks. It really couldn’t hurt to drink a cup or two when you have a flare up!
