Cold Sores Prevention

Monday, August 10th, 2009

If you have a cold sore, you should avoid kissing your baby (especially if he’s a newborn) until the cold sore goes away. You might consider wearing a surgical mask to cover the sore as well. Remember, one peck with an infected lip is all it takes to pass on the virus. You’ll also want to avoid sharing cups and eating utensils while you have a cold sore.

If your child seems prone to cold sores as he gets older, you may want to protect him from the sun, since exposure to sunlight can trigger an outbreak once a child has the virus. Putting a brimmed hat and some lip balm on him for protection should help.

Pierced Genitals and Infections

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Do I have a greater risk for infection if my genitals are pierced?

“It’s probably not a great idea to have foreign objects around your genitalia because areas that are prone to moisture and intimate contact are very attractive to bacteria,” Rosenzweig says. “But if you have great hygiene and a normal immune system, a genital piercing isn’t going to increase your risk for yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis.”

Still, some people always have a little redness or irritation around pierced areas, even when they’re in ho-hum spots like ears, noses or navels. So, if your piercing seems perpetually inflamed, take it out.

How to Minimize Cold Sores

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Cold sores can be both painful and embarrassing. For those who suffer cold sores, the following may help minimize their occurrence, severity and duration. Having suffered cold sores since I was a child, these are the remedies that really help me.

Here are some tips:

* Learn your cold sore triggers. For some, it may be stress, exposure to extreme cold/wind, sunburn, having a cold, and even certain foods(For me, its potato chips, eggplants, tomato sauce). Try to avoid or minimize triggers.

* Wear lip balm with SPF. Lip balm should be applied to the skin area just surrounding the lips, as well as the lips themselves. This goes a long way in protecting your lips from exposure to the elements that trigger cold sores. Healthy lips, that are not chapped and irritated, may suffer less breakouts.

* Take L-Lysine supplements. This inexpensive supplement, found wherever vitamins are sold, really helps. I take the supplement as a preventative whenever I have a cold/virus, since for me, that will usually trigger a cold sore or two. Since starting Lysine a couple of years back, I probably get half the number of cold sores I used to. Also, I rarely get those huge whoppers that swell up your whole lip, since adding Lysine to my arsenal. For frequent outbreaks, you may want to consider taking Lysine as a daily supplement–follow directions on the bottle for dosage.

Unfortunately, even with all of the above preventative steps, you may still get a cold sore now and then. FIGHT BACK!! At the first sign of a cold sore(tingly, warm feeling/sensation), take two Lysine supplements asap.

Next, grab an ice cube from the freezer and ice the area for about ten minutes. Wrap the ice in a paper towel to catch the melting water. The tingly area should feel numb when finished icing.

* After the ice treatment, using a q-tip or tissue, add a dab of minty toothpaste to the tingly area. Let it sit for as long as possible.

* Periodically re-ice and reapply toothpaste throughout the day, until the tingly feeling subsides. Even if the cold sore appears, doing the above should lessen it’s size and severity. Keep taking the Lysine supplements for the next few days, until symptoms improve.

Consult a doctor or pharmacist before starting any supplement.
Wash your hands before and after treating cold sores- they are contagious!

The Best Way To Treat A Cold Sore

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

A cold sore will go away on its own, but to ease any discomfort, apply ice to the sore. Or give your baby the proper dose of a mild pain reliever, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, if you think he’s bothered by the sore.

If your baby is less than 3 months old, give his doctor a call before you give him any medication. And never give aspirin to a baby. It could trigger Reye’s syndrome, a rare but life-threatening illness.

If your baby’s cold sore is painful, it may interfere with his eating. If this is the case, talk with his doctor right away.
