Deep Breathing
Treating social anxiety is one of the most important components to increasing your natural energy levels. When we are anxious or stressed it uses valuable physical and psychological energy that could otherwise be applied to productive activities. Aside from herbal stress relief supplements, there are a number of simple lifestyle changes you can practice for treating social anxiety. The first of these practices is deep breathing.

Do you fear that you may be experiencing anxiety symptoms? Anxiety is something that everyone experiences at one time or another, and at times, it can be a completely natural emotion. It can also be a disease that will not allow you to function or even work, so there are many different types of this ailment known as anxiety, which is similar to although a bit less than panic.
There are several types of anxiety. Most symptoms are brought on by stress, depression, sadness, loneliness, anger, and every other negative emotion imaginable. Sometimes, people experience anxiety out of the clear blue. Anxiety typically consists of an intense feeling of fear that overwhelms every aspect of your life. It is often very uncontrollable.
Some of the most common anxiety symptoms include depression, worry, panic attacks, chest pains, experiencing weakness or dizziness, unexplained muscle soreness, frequent blushing, and the list literally goes on and on. These are just a few, however. Most of the symptoms are generally physical and can vary from one individual to the next. For example, when you have an intense episode of anxiety, and everything seems to be spinning out of control, this is called a panic attack.
A panic attack is when you are suddenly overwhelmed with feelings of terror and irrational fear. The things that you are afraid of usually are not relevant to the situation that you are in when the panic attack approaches. This is the worst way in which anxiety manifests itself. Panic attacks cause tingling and numbness of the arms and legs, and sometimes of the face and lips. When a person is experiencing a panic attack, they usually believe that death is the only way out. Typically an attack lasts for no longer than ten minutes, then it is over, and you are fine.
Anxiety symptoms can also plague the emotions, causing the individual to feel intimidated by normal everyday situations like driving, socializing, and working. If you are a victim of anxiety, then you understand the emotional torture that comes with it. You can often become paranoid, sad, angry, and depressed all at once. Anxiety is hard enough to deal with in its own respect, let alone the excess baggage of negative emotion that it brings.
The mentality that comes with anxiety is one that can be scarring and unfortunately, usually requires intense counseling in order to be reversed. The thought processes that are formed inside of the mind during times of high anxiety, stress, and worry can frequently be very different from the natural thinking process. Anxiety symptoms can cause a terrible interruption that is very devastating.
If you continue to experience these torturous anxiety symptoms, they can begin to have a snow ball effect and potentially create an even more vicious cycle in our lives. Something needs to be done to stop the pattern. Everything that you do may start to reflect back on you in terms of your anxiety. It is a fact that chronic anxiety is not good for anyone, and it spirals our lives out of control.

The root cause of anxiety lies in fear. Although fear cannot be eliminated, it can be controlled. When a person is no longer afraid of getting anxious, more than half the battle is won. This is far easier said than done, but can at least be a starting point.
The easiest way to deal with anxiety is to breathe deeply. This normalizes the blood circulation and related problems. Meditation has been a time-tested technique to deal with stress. This helps get rid of the unwanted negative thoughts and therefore helps a person concentrate on the task at hand. Having sufficient sleep, especially during the night, gives the body a good rest and keeps it relaxed. Physical exercise is arguably the most potent and safe anxiety solution. Research has proved that the hormones released into the bloodstream during exercise and during anxiety are the same. The difference is that during exercise, these hormones are utilized and not accumulated in the blood. Cardiovascular exercises in combination with walking, jogging, bicycling, swimming, yoga, etc. are a good way of relaxing. Aromatherapy, which includes adding plant oils to massage oils or bath oils is another effective way of dealing with anxiety. Plant oils like lavender, rose, sandalwood, jasmine are also generally used for this purpose.
A healthy and balanced diet is another natural way of dealing with anxiety. Nutrients are required in greater quantity when a person is under stress. A protein deficient, low water and excessively carbohydrate-rich diet promotes anxiety. Food allergies can lead to many physical and psychological problems, including anxiety. Most of the food allergies are caused due to eight foods, viz.
* Wheat
* Egg
* Milk
* Soy
* Peanut
* Shellfish
* Fish
* Tree nuts (walnut, cashew, etc)
Preservatives in food and hormones added to meat (that facilitate quick growth and weight gain) promote anxiety. Stimulants like caffeine cause anxiety, sleeplessness and nervousness. The only reason people consume caffeine (contained in coffee, tea, chocolates, etc.) is because it makes them feel better; but this is only an illusion as caffeine does not contain any energy. Foods that reduce anxiety contain biotin, calcium, magnesium, pantothenic acid, folic acid, niacin, zinc and vitamins B1, B2, B6 and B12. These are contained in milk, cheese, eggs, cauliflower, peas, beans, lentil, turkey, spinach, cabbage, lamb, chicken, etc. Anxiety can also be controlled by the consumption of herbs like Ashwagandha, Dandelion leaves, Passion flower and Eleuthero/Siberian Ginseng.
As the saying goes ‘experience is the best teacher’; a person who has been through anxiety can be his own ‘best doctor’, as he knows what to do and what not to.

The most definite symptom of anxiety is increase in the heart rate, without performing any arduous physical activity. Other symptoms include:
* Shortness of breath
* Chest pain
* Nausea
* Fatigue
* Dryness of mouth
* Indigestion
* Frequent urination
* Headaches and stomach aches
The visible or external indications are: trembling, sweating, pale skin, inability to speak, etc. In extreme cases, a panic attack results when a person thinks that he or she will die. This is not very common and is different from a heart attack.
The symptoms are a natural reaction of the body to a perceived threat. This causes the body to release the adrenaline hormone from the adrenal (‘ad’ for adjacent and ‘renal’ for kidneys) gland located near the kidneys. Adrenaline is also called the ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ hormone. It prepares the body to either fight the given situation or run away from it. In doing so, it releases more energy into the blood stream and diverts blood (the carrier of energy inside the body) from the stomach, intestines and mouth to the hands and feet, i.e. organs that would be required to fight or to flee. Recent research by the University College London has proved that during anxiety, the flow of blood is diverted from the front of the brain to the mid brain. In the front brain, logical thinking and decision making are conducted, while in the mid brain, fight or flight, i.e. survival mechanisms are thought about. The release of extra energy to the hands and feet causes them to tremble. The diversion of blood from the intestinal tract and mouth results in less absorption of nutrients (therefore indigestion) and dryness of mouth respectively.

Anxiety, in the simplest of terms, can be explained as a feeling of fear, uneasiness and worry. Anxious people always tend to worry about family, money, school, profession, health and all other miscellaneous things, that are partially or completely beyond their control. These feelings of anxiety may be due to a real or perceived possibility of things going wrong.
Usually, fear and worry are mainly due to a negative line of thinking, and the degree of worry is far greater than the situation actually calls for. Anxiety is a natural reaction to stress. Some amount of stress is essential as it motivates a person to perform better. But when stress and the resultant anxiety becomes excessive, it hampers a person’s efficiency.

General Anxiety Disorder (or GAD) is an unrealistic or irrational worry about everything and anything to do with daily life. If this condition goes untreated it can completely dominate a person’s life. Thus a person that has GAD will be concerned over apparently trivial problems and fairly profound issues and will not be able to understand the difference between the two. When these thoughts begin to pray on a persons’ mind to an unhealthy degree then they struggle to get everyday things done and this can lead to more problems.
Although it is not fully understood why a person may suffer from generalized anxiety there are three factors that are believed to play a part in causing the disorder.
The environment or lifestyle that a person leads can cause GAD. So chronic stress can bring on a general feeling of depression that can dominate a persons thoughts. Chronic stress may be caused by a combination of factors. Generally, stressors are stressful working environments. Other things might include strained interpersonal relationships like going through a divorce or losing a spouse or child. Traumatic events can also lead to generalized anxiety.
It may also be in a person’s genetics to suffer GAD. If your blood relatives have had the problem there is an increased chance that you wil be pre-disposed to the condition.
Altered brain chemistry is another factor that may cause GAD. Too many or too few brain neurotransmitters can lead to depression or joy. In effect they influence the way a person feels regardless of the rational or real reasons for such emotions. Knowing why this imbalance occurs is still an area of research.
Treating generalized anxiety disorder is a two pronged affair. Medication will treat the immediate symptoms and therapy will work on the underlying factors for why a person may be having problems.
Medication is really a tranquilizer or anti-depressant type of chemical. It works on dulling the senses or rather affecting the neurotransmitters so that they do not transmit depression or anxiety. Common brand names for these types of drugs are prozac and zoloft.
The obvious advantage of taking drugs is that they can produce instance relief from the symptoms. The bad part is that they only provide temporary relief and do not get to the root of the problem. Many people get stuck on medication for life if they have no other treatment options open to them. In the end, it can lead to a complete reliance on a drug such as zoloft, which is not desirable and can lead to other problems.
The other treatment option is through therapy. Cognitive behavior therapy is the general term for a whole range of counseling activities that seek to help the sufferer understand their problem better. The simple objective is to aid them single out possible reasons that will cause general anxiety and then work through the potential reasons why it is unwarranted to feel this anxiety. With this type of treatment a sufferer can get to the stage where they can rationalize anxiety away.
Therapy is obviously far more esoteric than taking a drug. In short, you have to work at it if you want to get over your problems. Work or effort from a mental health professional that will counsel a patient and work from the patient. If the patient does not have the right attitude and work hard during the sessions then the chances of getting anything out of them is diminished.

Not that I’ve gotten sick. Not yet, anyway.
It’s just that all the data and day-by-day tracking of the illness have made me, and a few others, a bit anxious. I hate getting sick and having to stay home in bed staring at the ceiling.
For days, I’ve read about the swine flu’s dangers, tracked its spread and taken note of the human damage it has done. Thursday, there were reports of confirmed cases in the county.
I tuned in to the president, too, as he advised that we citizens wash our hands frequently with soapy hot water. As a good citizen, I’ve complied. And yet, I’ve become increasingly jumpy.
Wednesday, for example, I stopped by my favorite pharmacy to buy a pack of breath-sweetening chewing gum. A girl in front of me in the check-out line was maybe 15. She was frowning and pale-looking and not well. She held the sleeve of her sweatshirt wrapped across her mouth and nose.
Why? I wondered. Maybe she was suffering the first symptoms of the flu. After all, she looked as if she might be trying to filter out every virus her breath might contain.
I know the swine flu has not yet evolved into predicted pandemic proportions, but it may yet flare and spread. So far, at least, it isn’t as bad as we first feared and the regular flu seems more dangerous, killing 36,000 people a year.
I don’t take the swine flu lightly, of course. It makes people sick. It can kill. It may yet morph into something more ominous.
Later Wednesday in the grocery store, I heard somebody sneeze by Produce. In Cereal, a lady was coughing softly. It could be seasonal allergies. Or, it could be …!
I bought my hamburger buns and bolted out the door. If anxiety could be turned into a swine flu antidote, nobody would get sick.

There are several recognized types of anxiety disorders, including:
* Panic disorder: People with this condition have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. Other symptoms of a panic attack include sweating, chest pain, palpitations (irregular heartbeats), and a feeling of choking, which may make the person feel like he or she is having a heart attack or “going crazy.”
* Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): People with OCD are plagued by constant thoughts or fears that cause them to perform certain rituals or routines. The disturbing thoughts are called obsessions, and the rituals are called compulsions. An example is a person with an unreasonable fear of germs who constantly washes his or her hands.
* Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): PTSD is a condition that can develop following a traumatic and/or terrifying event, such as a sexual or physical assault, the unexpected death of a loved one, or a natural disaster. People with PTSD often have lasting and frightening thoughts and memories of the event, and tend to be emotionally numb.
* Social anxiety disorder: Also called social phobia, social anxiety disorder involves overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations. The worry often centers on a fear of being judged by others, or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment or lead to ridicule.
* Specific phobias: A specific phobia is an intense fear of a specific object or situation, such as snakes, heights, or flying. The level of fear usually is inappropriate to the situation and may cause the person to avoid common, everyday situations.
* Generalized anxiety disorder: This disorder involves excessive, unrealistic worry and tension, even if there is little or nothing to provoke the anxiety.

Environmentalists in Western Massachusetts are split over proposals for wood-burning electric power stations. Four proposed wood-burning generators would qualify for renewable-energy credits, but some activists worry about their effect on the state’s forests. As long as the state fulfills its promise to monitor closely the impact on forests, however, the power stations could play an important role in displacing utilities’ use of fossil-fuel-burning units.
Wood-fired electricity qualifies as carbon-neutral because the carbon dioxide the generators emit would have been released anyway as trees die and decompose. This distinguishes the carbon of trees from the carbon of burned coal or natural gas, which would otherwise stay locked underground.
Critics of the biomass facilities, as the wood-burning generators are called, say that the fuel used in loggers’ chain saws, chippers, and forestry vehicles undercuts the carbon neutrality of the process. Also, critics argue that harvested trees can no longer absorb carbon dioxide at a time when the planet could be speeding toward a global-warming tipping point.
Proponents of biomass power generation counter that careful thinning of forests to produce biomass fuel could actually increase the capacity of remaining trees to grow quickly and absorb more carbon dioxide. Also, unlike other renewable energy sources like wind and solar, biomass would provide baseload, not intermittent, power.
Last month the state decided to let a proposed biomass plant in Greenfield – expected to generate 47 megawatts, enough to power about 4,700 homes – proceed without filing a full environmental impact report. In his ruling, the state’s secretary of energy and environmental affairs, Ian Bowles, said the state had already formed an advisory group of stakeholders and a Technical Steering Committee to address the issue raised by many critics: the “sustainable stewardship” of state forest lands.
Some advocates of biomass say that by using low-grade wood, diseased and invasive-species trees, and the waste from tree-trimming, such power plants have the potential to improve, not degrade, the region’s forests. Right now, the greatest threat to privately owned woodlands is the pressure to sell to developers. A new market for forest waste would create value and help keep the forests off the auction block.
A real danger is that a flood of biomass plants would put such demand on forests that they would begin to resemble the denuded landscapes left by farmers and charcoalers of 200 years ago. That’s where the state’s advisory group and Technical Steering Committee would have to make sure that biomass does not turn into a biomess.
