How reliable are the findings?
This study was very large and carefully done. However, its findings may not be entirely reliable, as they are based on sparse data from hospital discharge records.
* Without detailed records, the researchers can’t be certain that women were correctly diagnosed with migraines. For example, some women might have had tension-type headaches rather than migraines, and vice versa.
* Some pregnant women who were in hospital for other serious problems may not have had their migraines recorded.
* The study looked only at pregnant women who were admitted to hospital for a migraine or who had a migraine while in hospital. So those with migraines outside of hospital were not included. This could mean the risk of stroke was overestimated.
More research is needed to confirm the link between migraines and stroke risk and also explore what this link means.
