Ways of Treating Visual Migraine

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Visual migraine is a type of migraine known also as ocular migraine and ophthalmic migraine. Similar to the common migraine, its cause is vascular; that is, it involves the blood vessels. Whereas the typical migraine affects the arteries located in the surface of the brain, it affects the veins that supply blood to the vision center.

During a visual migraine episode, the sufferer experiences visual disturbances that typically last for fifteen to thirty minutes. It usually starts as a shimmering light with a semi-circular shape and jagged edges, seen in the peripheral vision and later expands to become more central. The ability to see is obscured within the jagged area. A headache may accompany the disturbance but does not occur in all cases. The more common symptoms that come with this are nausea and vomiting and a heightened sensitivity to light. Although the root cause of this particular migraine is not known, some of its common triggers are identified as fatigue, depression, dehydration, eyestrain, stress, alcohol, certain foods, and a shift in estrogen levels.

Diagnosing visual migraine may require visits to the ophthalmologist and neurologist. This is to make sure that the visual disturbances are not caused by an underlying eye condition such as a detached retina or a blood clot in the brain. Once this has been established, then proper treatment can be provided.

Certainly, this is not fatal nor does it cause any damage to the brain or eyes. And since no pain comes with it, treatment is usually unnecessary unless a headache arises during an episode. However, if the attacks are frequent, medications may have to be administered. If the visual migraine occurs with a headache, over-the-counter medicines like ibuprofen and naproxen can be taken to relieve the pain. In addition, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) and aspirin are known to prevent these migraine attacks because they help keep the arteries in their normal size. Medications should be taken as soon as the first sign of the aura is felt. During the attack, the vision may be so hampered that doing other activities could be impossible. In these times, the patient should relax and wait for the said migraine to end. Bright lights and sounds should be avoided because they could potentially worsen the symptoms.

Having a visual migraine attack, though most of the times painless, can be frightening, especially for those who experience it for the first time. If anyone encounters any of the symptoms associated with this type of migraine, he should consult his physician immediately. This migraine, by itself, usually requires no treatment but the symptoms could be signs of a more serious condition. Knowing about a disease and how to deal with it is the best treatment of all.

Symptoms of Ocular Migraine

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

The symptoms of ocular migraine can also be classified as migraine auras. A migraine aura is a definite sign that a painful migraine headache will follow. It is a symptom that let migraine sufferers know ahead of time that a headache is about to manifest itself. Some people will have “pre” symptoms for a couple of days that will signal them that an agonizing headache is on its way.

Aura effects can develop for about 6 minutes and generally can appear from twenty minutes to an hour before the start of a headache. They are evidence of what used to be called “classic migraine”. Currently, medical practitioners came up with a more scientifically accurate term, migraine with aura. Only less than 20% of migraine sufferers consistently experience any kind of aura before a headache begins.

Symptoms of ocular migraines – aura effects

Most migraine auras can be seen with the eye (visual). These effects are called positive visual phenomena because rather than their vision gets hazy or goes dark, people who see them experience the following:

* Halos or Auras – an atmosphere of light, dust or smoke surrounding objects, specifically light objects.
* Floating or Flashing Lights – these can be colored or white spots that appear to move.
* Lightning Bolts – a spiked or zigzag line that flickers and/or arcs over the field of vision; with the regularity and intensity increasing over time until the person can no longer see; this light show usually ends with the beginning of headache pain.
* Photophobia – a severe sensitivity to light; this light effect repeatedly lasts the extent of the headache.

Most aura episodes last less than an hour. Migraine sufferers who experience auras that last more than an hour are told to suffer from migraines with continued aura. In some cases you may experience aura effects without developing a headache, but it’s still believed to be a symptom of chronic migraines. At different times you may experience all three variations, migraine with aura, migraine with extended aura, or a common aura without the headache.

If you’re one of the 500 million people worldwide who suffers from the agonizing pain of migraine, you should definitely consider using natural migraine remedies because common medications ONLY HIDE the symptoms for a while.

The Search For Migraine Relief Begins

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Since I am not made of money, I cannot afford to go to clinics and migraine workshops. I have to find something that will work today. I need someone that can see me today. I need help today.

My friends recommend I seek the relief of a chiropractor. I am not so sure how well this will help but I find that it is not a bad idea. It can’t be worse than what I am already going through so why not.

Chiropractic Treatment for Headaches

I am a skeptical person by nature so I do some research. Turns out that regular treatment actually reduces the frequency of migraines for some people. I couldn’t believe it.

I also found out that some chiropractors offer massage as part of their practice. Then I find out that even more research has been done and massage has been proven effective in relieving tension headaches.

While the chiropractor does not help with all my migraines, it does help with many of my migraines and I have one that sees me the same day. Overall, I have to recommend seeing a chiropractor for headaches. If you suffer from migraines, you do not have to suffer in silence, see a chiropractor today.

6 Natural Ways to Deal With a Migraine

Friday, March 12th, 2010

One of the most painful and troublesome headaches is that of Migraines. Migraine usually begins on right side of head and gradually spreads to entire centre and back of the head. It can also cause discomfort to the shoulder and neck area. Alternately, a strained neck and shoulder area can also be the cause of migraine. Often induced by warm temperatures, prolonged stress or substances like vanilla, chocolates, cheese, MSG, soy etc, this one is difficult to get rid of.

While reduced intake of substances (vanilla essence, cheese etc) causing migraine can be helpful, one caused by heat and stress is at times unavoidable and causes greater discomfort. Some home based remedies can be handy in initial stages to reduce the pain as well as prevent it from increasing in intensity.

1. Ice Pack – probably the best remedy to keep migraine intensity low in initial stages. Use ice pack generously on the area of head where pain intensity is higher. Keep dabbing it all over the head to cool the nerves.

2. Bay leaf paste – apply bay leaf paste on the forehead and temples to get a soothing balm like relief.

3. Lemon and Rock Salt – squeeze a lemon and a teaspoon of rock salt in a glass of water and take small sips to avoid that queasy and nausea like feeling when migraine begins.

4. Apple a day – eating an apple regularly in the morning, on an empty stomach (without brushing your teeth) can also be helpful.

5. Milk and Unrefined Brown Sugar – regular intake of half a glass of milk with small piece of Unrefined brown sugar (called Jaggery) also helps gradual cure of migraine.

6.  Homeopathic treatment – while there may be different pain relievers for migraine, the best treatment to go with is Homeopathy. With no side effects and a very natural cure, it really helps in reducing frequency of migraine attacks.

For those who get migraines induced by heat, avoid high temperatures, use eye shades and caps regularly when stepping out in the sun. Use an umbrella while out for work / shopping etc during the day. Also, never step out with an empty stomach. Always eat well before leaving for work etc to avoid acidity which also induces migraine combined with heat outside.

Ways to Minimize the Risk of Migraine Headaches

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

When chemicals are released into the nerve fibers and the blood vessels enlarge, it can cause migraine headaches. And when this type of headache strikes, it can render you unable to carry on with your daily activities. Not only do migraine headaches cause debilitating pain, they can also cause sensitivity to light and sound, vomiting, blurred vision, diarrhea, and cold hands and feet.

Migraine headaches can strike both young and old. But this type of headache typically affects people under the age of 40 and those with a family history of the condition. Women are also more prone to suffering from migraines because of hormonal changes during pregnancy, menstruation, menopause, and oral contraceptive use.

The things that bring on migraine headaches can vary from person to person. Some potential triggers include:

* hormone fluctuation
* stress
* poor sleep habits
* bright lights
* loud noises
* strong odors
* overexertion
* obesity
* smoking
* skipping meals
* certain foods
* dehydration
* low blood sugar
* alcohol consumption (particularly red wine)

Migraine headaches are unpredictable, so there is no guarantee that you won’t suffer from them. But there are some things you can do to reduce your risk.

Identify and Avoid Triggers

Use a journal or diary to write down the things that happen before the onset of your migraines. This will help you identify the things that trigger these headaches. Do the headaches happen after a glass of wine, or after you forget to eat breakfast? Once you identify the primary triggers, you can avoid them in the future.

Get Plenty of Sleep

When you don’t get enough sleep, you become more prone to migraine headaches. So aim to get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night (children require more rest). But don’t snooze too long as too much sleep can also trigger migraine headaches.

Eat Right and Exercise

Exercising and eating right improves your body’s ability to manage day-to-day stress. Your diet should include plenty of fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Also, drink plenty of water to keep the body properly hydrated.

Aim to get at least one-hour of moderate physical activity each day. Your workout routine can include a combination of walking, jogging, biking, yoga, Pilates, swimming, and aerobics.

Avoid Certain Foods

Foods that contain aspartame, nitrates, monosodium glutamate (MSG), and tyramine can contribute to migraine headaches. Some examples of these types of foods include:

* aged cheeses
* hot dogs
* lunch meats
* spices
* soy products
* low calorie sweeteners
* fava beans
* hard sausages

Over the counter pain relievers can be used to manage mild migraines, but more severe pain may require the use of prescription abortive medications and pain relievers. Your doctor will determine if these types of medications are appropriate for your situation.

Although rare, severe headaches can be caused by serious health conditions such as aneurism, meningitis, and tumors in the brain. So if your migraines are persistent, or accompanied by speech or vision difficulties, see a doctor immediately.

Easy Migraine Treatment

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

The easy migraine treatment your doctor is not telling you!

If you suffer from migraines, every bright light, stressful afternoon or loud noise can be a source of pure dread as you wait to see if a migraine will develop from these common causes of plain old headaches. Migraines make common headaches seem like a blessing, and you may limit your life and your activities dramatically in an effort to avoid these incredibly painful experiences.

People with chronic migraines, serious headaches that occur regularly over a long period of time, may be treated with everything from mood altering medicines to hypnosis. However, there is one treatment that has been used with considerable success that your doctor may not be telling you about.

According to preliminary research, the essential fatty acid omega 3, commonly found in fatty game fish like salmon and tuna, may dramatically reduce the duration and frequency of migraine headaches.

Preliminary research means that the scientific community not only suspects that this is the case, but has done studies that indicate omega 3 can seriously help control and eliminate chronic migraines. However, because these results have not yet been accepted by the medical community at large, researchers and their research on omega 3 have remained under the radar for most doctors.

Even most neurologists will not recommend an omega 3 supplement to help with migraines simply because they are not aware of this fatty acid’s potential.

Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil have long been acknowledged as a good supplement for cardiovascular health. To get the other benefits of this essential nutrient, however, you need much larger doses than you can get by just eating tuna melts once or twice a week. In order to derive full benefits from omega 3, you need to take it in the form of a daily supplement that contains the right types of the fatty acid to protect and bolster not just your health but also your psychological well being.

Look for a fish oil supplement made from salmon rather than tuna or other fish, as Arctic Circle salmon swim in the cleanest, clearest waters in the world and are far better for consumption than commercial tuna or mackerel.

Salmon Oil is made from only the flesh of Arctic Circle salmon. In addition, it’s certified to be 100% free of any toxins, pesticides, fungicides or heavy metals. In other words, it’s 100% pure omega 3 just as nature intended you to consume it.
