How reliable are the findings?

Using a US database, the researchers combed through more than 18 million records of patients discharged from hospital from 2000 to 2003. Among women who were pregnant when they entered hospital, nearly 34,000 had a diagnosis of migraine. These women were 15 times more likely to have a stroke than pregnant women without migraines. Those with migraines also had double the risk of heart disease and triple the risk of blood clots in veins.

These figures sound alarming. However the research does not tell us how many of the women in the study actually had strokes and other problems. Strokes are known to be rare among pregnant women, so the number of women who had strokes in the study is also likely to be very small.
