When chemicals are released into the nerve fibers and the blood vessels enlarge, it can cause migraine headaches. And when this type of headache strikes, it can render you unable to carry on with your daily activities. It used to be that Ted Willis could barely stand to get up in the morning, his head throbbing so much it felt as if his right eye would explode.
Even after a couple of surgeries, several consultations with specialists and a diagnosis of slipped disks in his spinal cord, the headaches subsisted. Then he took a recommendation from a local pain doctor: trigger point injections.
“It sounds so simple, but it’s such a dynamic thing. Instead of saying ‘these are drugs, go take them,’ they were telling me they could reroute that pain,” said Willis.
“It’s been a blessing to me.”
Trigger point injection is a procedure used to treat painful areas of muscle that contain trigger points, or knots of muscle that form when muscles do not relax. Trigger points may irritate the nerves around them and cause referred pain, or pain that is felt in another part of the body.
In the procedure, a health care worker inserts a small needle into the patient’s trigger point and injects a local anesthetic. With the injection, the trigger point is made inactive and the pain is alleviated.
A brief course of treatment usually results in sustained relief. Injections are given in a doctor’s office and usually take just a few minutes.
Dr. Bradley Carpentier, a Salinas-based pain specialist, said the procedure can work for people such as Willis, who had experienced chronic pain with few options otherwise.
“It’s not for everyone,” said Carpentier, who said he offers it as an alternative treatment for patients with chronic pain who do not want to stay on regular pain medication.
Dr. Carpentier supplements Willis’ injections with steroids and numbing agents. The combination can sustain Willis’ pain for up to a few months at a time.
In Willis’ case, that pain was to the point where he couldn’t think straight on any given day. It nearly cost him his career as an insurance agent.
“I would have to leave the office and go home, lay down and tell everyone to leave me alone,” said Willis.
Willis suffered through a good portion of the 1990s with a dull, chronic tension headache that made its way to his right eye socket.
After years of medication and treatment, it was determined that two discs in his spinal cord had slipped. Surgery initially helped end the pain, but a 2003 rear-end accident brought them back even more intensely.
“I was dreading having more surgery, and Dr. Carpentier’s office came up with the procedure,” said Willis.
Carpentier explained the object of the injection was to scramble the nerve sensory. So when your brain goes to the place of the headache, it doesn’t know where to go.
For Willis, the result was immediate.
“As soon as he finished, he said how do you feel,” said Willis. “I just said ‘My god, I can’t believe this. For the first time in 15years, I absolutely have no pain.’”
The procedure was not permanent. Willis has returned to Dr. Carpentier’s office for follow up injections and Carpentier has cautioned Willis about prolonged treatment.
For now, Willis is back at work and living pain free. He still takes pain medication, but the trigger point injections have helped curb the amount.
“It’s not a miracle cure, but if you were taking five (doses) of something every day, and now you’re down to two or one, that’ s a big difference,” he said. “That’s what I was looking for”.

Medication

The most common type of headache is called a tension headache, which feels like tightened muscles around the head, neck and shoulders and can last for several minutes or even days. Tension headaches are sometimes caused by stress, muscle stiffness or clenching or grinding one’s teeth. Less commonly, cluster headaches can cause sudden sharp pains repeatedly over a period of several weeks at a time. Migraine headaches are often severe enough to interfere with one’s usual activities and may be paired with vomiting or extreme sensitivity to noise or light. Sinus infections also frequently cause headaches, often on the forehead or over the cheeks, with increased pain when one leans forward or lies down.
In some people, certain foods can trigger migraines or other headaches. This problem is usually not a true food allergy, which involves the immune system, but rather an intolerance or sensitivity. Symptoms from food sensitivities may start about 30 minutes to several hours after eating the offending food, which may explain why some people get these headaches while sleeping. Common food triggers include monosodium glutamate (MSG), some food dyes, tyramine (a substance found in aged cheeses, red wine, beer and overripe fruit), pickled foods, some processed meats and caffeine from coffee, tea or chocolate. On the flip side, the absence of certain foods (such as skipping meals and having a low blood sugar, or suffering from “withdrawal” after the regular intake of caffeine) can cause headaches as well.
For headaches that keep recurring, see your doctor and be ready to report details about the quality of the headache (such as whether they are sharp, dull or throbbing in nature), the severity of the pain, the frequency of the headaches and whether the headaches are related to any activities such as sleep, exercise or eating certain foods. It’s also helpful to note if other parts of the body are affected (such as eye pain, cold symptoms or vomiting). Finally, let your doctor know what medications or remedies you are taking (since some of these can cause headaches as a side effect) as well as what you do that makes the headaches better.
Although most headaches are not caused by an underlying medical problem, headaches can sometimes reflect serious conditions such as a brain tumor or bleeding inside the head. It’s important to seek medical care right away if a headache is sudden and extremely painful, appears after trauma to the head or is associated with abnormal nerve or muscle function (such as vision problems, slurred speech, weakness of the arms or legs, seizures or confusion). Tests may be performed to check for any medical problems that need immediate treatment.

Common food additives such as caffeine in our teas or coffee, dairy products like milk, and msg can all cause migraines.
Figuring out if the migraines you are getting are food induced is simple, providing you follow these few easy steps. Start by trimming down your diet to the basics. Then every week, gradually introduce foods that you think might be the triggers. If you do this, then you should be able to find out which foods are giving you the migraines in a few weeks.
Research also shows that your environment can cause migraines. Forty eight participants of a clinical study were made to go on a dairy free diet. Over sixty percent of the participants lowered the frequency of their migraines, if not stopped them altogether, just by eliminating dairy products from their diet.
Anecdotal evidence exists on people who, after dropping dairy products such as milk from their diet, marked an a vast improvement on their conditions. Others have even said that their migraines have stopped completely.
Still, researches say that dairy may not be the only factor involved, but that it was the freshness of the products, or rather the amount of bacteria that might be present at the time of ingestion. They claim that some of these participants may be lactose intolerant, and instead blamed the presence of microbe causing dairy products.
We may never be able to figure out the exact answer, but one thing is for sure: there is a direct relation between migraines and dairy products.

Temperature Increase Is the Biggest Weather-Related Headache Trigger
Most migraine sufferers believe that weather changes can bring on their headaches, but the scientific proof has been lacking — until now.
New research suggests that certain weather conditions may trigger migraines and other severe headaches. But frequent sufferers may be surprised by some of the findings.
The study reveals that:
* Regardless of the time of year, an increase in temperature was the biggest weather-related headache trigger. Researchers reported that every 9 degree Fahrenheit increase in temperature raised the headache risk by 7.5%.
* Low barometric air pressure is considered by some to be specific to migraines, but the study found no link between migraines and low-pressure systems. The researchers say lower pressure was associated with a small increase in risk for non-migraine headaches.
