Although formal studies involving pregnant women have not been conducted, skeletal muscle relaxants have not been shown to cause problems for pregnant women or their fetuses. Animal studies also have not indicated a link between skeletal muscle relaxants and birth defects. Nonetheless, women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant are advised to consult their physician before taking skeletal muscle relaxants.
Some muscle relaxants have been shown to pass into breast milk and cause symptoms such as drowsiness and upset stomach in nursing babies. As a result, women who are breastfeeding should not use these drugs without first obtaining a physician’s approval.

Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) may harm fetal development. Consequently, sexually active men and women using DMARDs should use effective means of contraception during every sexual encounter. In most cases, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or who may become pregnant are advised not to take DMARDs.
In addition, it is important to note that some DMARDs may decrease the effect of birth control pills (oral contraceptives). Patients using these contraceptives are advised to ask their physician about alternate methods of birth control.
DMARDs are acceptable for children in certain circumstances, such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis or organ transplantation, but children are monitored closely for possible side effects. Occasionally, lower doses of DMARDs may be required for elderly individuals. However, they generally are at no greater risk for side effects than younger adults.

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to Soma or meprobamate (Equanil, Miltown), or if you have porphyria.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:
* epilepsy or other seizure disorder;
* liver disease; or
* kidney disease.
If you have any of these conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take Soma.
This medication may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Soma should never be given to another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it. You may have withdrawal symptoms when you stop using Soma after using it over a long period of time. Withdrawal symptoms include stomach pain, sleep problems, headache, nausea, and seizure (convulsions). Do not stop using this medication suddenly without first talking to your doctor. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely.
This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether Soma passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not give this medication to a child younger than 12 years old.
