Things to Try When the Dentist’s Office is Closed.

If you’ve ever experienced a toothache, you know how painful it can be. And, wouldn’t you know, toothaches almost always occur when the dentist’s office is closed. So what can you do to obtain toothache pain relief until the dentist can see you? Try some of the following solutions.

1. Commercial Toothache Gel

This is readily available at your local drug or discount store. In fact, you may want to keep some on hand in your emergency medical kit for occasions like this. These formulations generally just numb the pain until you can visit a dentist.

2. Oil of Cloves

Oil of cloves can provide fast toothache pain relief if your pain is being caused by a cavity. Add one or two drops of oil of cloves to a small cotton ball and apply it directly to the cavity. Try to fit the cotton ball directly into the cavity hole if you can. This will help to calm the nerve that is causing much of the toothache pain.

3.  Echinacea and Aloe

You can make your own herbal toothache remedy from a combination of echinacea and aloe. Echinacea fights infection while aloe reduces inflammation and pain. Keep a bottle of powdered echinacea pills in your medicine cabinet as well as a bottle of pure aloe gel.
You can easily purchase these items at a health food store.

Open two capsules of the powdered echinacea and mix the contents with pure aloe gel. You want to add just enough of the gel to create a paste that resembles the consistency of toothpaste. Apply this echinacea and aloe paste to the gum area surrounding the painful tooth and allow it to dissolve. You can apply this special herbal paste as often as needed for toothache pain relief.

4. Echinacea

If you’re out of aloe vera gel, you can always use echinacea on its own. Take a gelatin capsule of echinacea and place it in your cheek next to the gum area surrounding the hurting tooth. Let the echinacea capsule dissolve around the gum. This herbal remedy has a temporary side effect of turning your mouth green so, unless it’s Saint Patrick’s Day, you should probably only try this at bedtime.

5. Calendula and Chamomile

Calendula and chamomile are two powerful yet gentle herbs that are well known for their soothing and healing properties. They can help to draw out the infection surrounding the painful tooth. An easy way to apply one of these healing herbs is to take a tea bag filled with pure calendula or chamomile and apply it to the area of the toothache for roughly 15 minutes. You can use this method for up to three days. Using a regular black tea bag can also provide some relief if you don’t have any calendula or chamomile tea bags available. Black tea contains tannins which can help draw out toxins from the gums.

The next time you need emergency toothache pain relief try one of the above methods. You’ll be able to survive much more comfortably until the dentist is available to see you.

How To Get Rid of A Toothache

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

There’s nothing worse than a toothache. You can’t sleep, you can’t eat almost nothing and you are taking painkillers like crazy.  I can’t promise you the information I will provide you with will necessarily stop that in an instant, but I will try my best. Just remember that the first thing you should do is try and contact your doctor. This information here is only meant to make your life easier until you are able to see your doctor.

The first thing you want to do is clean your teeth. This might hurt if your problem is severe, but try your best to resist it. Also, try using a tooth paste that is made for sensitive teeth. After that, try and sit in a comfortable position. Lay down or sit upright, depending on what feels more comfortable to you.

A good cure for this can be clove oil, which will ease the pain for a short period of time. Use some cotton wool and place it on the tooth that is causing you trouble.

If this is not enough for you or you want to get even more of a pain relief try applying a hot water bottle to the area that hurts most. Be careful with this though as some people state that you should never apply heat to an infected area of your mouth. A hot water bottle is only likely to be useful if you’re suffering from sinus inflammation. You’re dentist will be able to take an x-ray to confirm this.
Which leads us to our final and ultimate advice: Call the dentist! If the one you’re familiar with is not available, just search for another one. There is nothing worse than letting an infection live just because your doctor busy. There are plenty of doctors out there.

I hope that helps, and I also hope you enjoy reading this.

Relief For Aching Teeth

Monday, May 11th, 2009

An Invercargill woman said she had been suffering toothache for three weeks because of a chronic shortage of dentists in Invercargill.

One of Saturn Turnbull’s left-side molars had been aching for some time but worsened three weeks ago when some of the tooth chipped off.

“I enjoyed 40 hours of childbirth more than I enjoy having to live with toothache,” she said yesterday.

The personal trainer had tried to book an appointment with her own dentist but was told by a receptionist she could not get an appointment until June and was given the emergency dental number and told to ring it, she said.

However, the message there says there is a critical dentist shortage in Southland and the service is unavailable during normal working week-days.

It says dentists are listed in the Yellow Pages and might be able to provide emergency care. Anyone with major or life-threatening dental trauma should contact the Southland Hospital emergency department, the message says.

Mrs Turnbull said she called the 15 dental clinics in Invercargill listed in the Yellow Pages but none was prepared to see her.

She had even called the three listed in Gore and was “practically laughed at” by receptionists, she said.

The pain was interfering with her work, making it difficult for her to concentrate while taking aerobics classes and dealing with clients.

“I’m living on about six to eight Nurofen and six Panadols a day, just to get through the day.

“The pain goes right across my face but there’s nothing I can do about it.”

She was not eligible for emergency treatment at Southland Hospital unless the problem was life-threatening because she did not hold a community services card, she said.

She was desperate and said it was appalling that it had become so difficult to find a dentist.

New Zealand Dental Association Southland branch president Hilary Strang is on leave and could not be reached for comment.

However, a receptionist at a dental clinic in Invercargill said the emergency dental treatment was still available but only on weekends.

The emergency dental line does not inform people of that.

The receptionist said the line was switched to another recorded message at 5pm on Fridays to inform patients of who to contact for emergency treatment during the weekend.

When The Southland Times telephoned at 5.20pm the message had not been switched over.

Southland District Health Board acting chief operating officer Leanne Samuel says in a written statement that to access emergency dental services the person needs to have approval from Work and Income if they are a beneficiary or have a level of income similar to that.

They must also have a valid community services card, she says.
